The First Half of February

At the beginning of the month, upon our return from Virginia, we came home to a puddle in the hallway. A big puddle. I had no idea what had caused it, but I knew it was going to be expensive the minute I saw it.

I was right. The water heater was slowly leaking and as we investigated, we found a sticker that said it had been installed in October of 1988. At that moment we knew we would soon be the proud owners of a brand new one.

The next day, Mike's uncle Frank came to our house and installed it for us. He is an excellent handy man and runs his own biz, so if anyone out there needs any work done, let me know and I will give you his number.

There are several pieces of good news about this situation. Firstly, we got to thoroughly clean out the laundry closet and replace the flooring under the water heater. It was really grungy beforehand and looks much better now. Secondly, the old water heater was really loud and would clank and hum every time it was filling up. Our new one is silent. And finally, I suppose it is good for the property value to have a new appliance like a water heater. Hopefully it will run until 2028 since the last one made it twenty years. Here's hoping...

If that wasn't enough excitement for the month, last week we realized that something was wrong with the freezer. The ice cream was liquid and nothing seemed very cold. So, we called a plumber who said from the symptoms that he figured the compressor was broken and that it shouldn't be too huge of a repair.

Wrong. When he arrived he realized that the compressor was fine but that some kind of internal system had gotten backed up and that the whole refrigerator was basically totalled; it would be more trouble to try to fix than it was worth.

Are you kidding me? The refrigerator that we negotiated into the contract for the house just over a year ago?! And by this point, mind you, the refrigerator side was warming up too and all of our food was spoiled.

Oh well.

After many days of online browsing and in-store perusing, we found a great deal at HHGregg on this one:

It was delivered this morning and I must say that after several days without one, I was quite excited about its arrival. We especially like the french doors on top and freezer bottom.

The best part was going to the grocery store today, coming home and filling it up. Fresh food in an organized, new refrigerator is quite pleasing.

Speaking of food (and this is a really bad segue), I saw some baby piglets at my sister's farm last week. Aren't they adorable?

Yes, I think I'll pass on bacon for a while.

That little piggy face just gets me.

Confession: I had some really excellent Chicken Cordon Bleu this weekend and I thought not once about this picture.

Mike and I spent Saturday with Grammy Mac and had such a wonderful time. We arrived mid-day, went to Panera (of course) for lunch, just visited in the afternoon, and went to an Awesome restaurant for dinner (which is where the Chicken Cordon Bleu came in). The food was so good that it blew my mind. Seriously.

We went back to Grammys and played Apples to Apples for the rest of the evening. It was exactly how Valentine's Day should be: Full of Love and Fun. And to top it all off, the next morning Grammy made us pancakes for breakfast. (She spoils us). It was a great trip.

In other news, for those of you who have not yet heard, Mike and I are getting married in June! We are excited to share our plans and have been enjoying the process of figuring out exactly how we want to celebrate. I'm sure there will be much more to come on this subject, but I thought I'd make the official blog announcement. :)

And finally, we still have this little beast with us. Actually, he is a darling dog and we will miss him when he goes home later this week. He's added a lot of energy and fun to the house while he's been here.
